Coral reefs are quite rich in types and beautiful in Hon Yen Area

According to scientists fromthe Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center, the tropical sea in Vietnam is a suitableenvironment for coral species to grow and develop, including the waters of thecentral coastal provinces. In terms of species, Vietnam's water flock about 400species of coral out of 800 species of the world. However, the situation ofclimate change, environmental pollution, negative impacts from people, seastorms and whiteness (death) phenomenon are threatening the number of corals.

According to information fromthe Department of Sea and Islands of Phu Yen (Department of Natural Resourcesand Environment), the results of research and surveys from Nha Trang Instituteof Oceanography said that the coastal areas near Phu Yen shore had 182 speciesof corals, particularly at the National Monument, Hon Yen population had 17species that lived and grew well. Most coral reefs are near the shore, so theyare abused and exploited.

Recently, experts andscientists from the Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center at the request of theprovincial People's Committee have conducted a preliminary survey of coralreefs at some places capable of developing marine ecotourism. 3 points selectedinclude: Hon Lao Mai Nha, Hon Yen (Tuy An district) and Hon Nua sea area (DongHoa district).

The initial results show thatthe coral reefs here are relatively diverse in types, beautiful andmulti-valued, including tourism development. The current situation also showsthat the coral reefs here have been destroyed due to natural factors (seastorms break), but mostly caused by negative impacts from people (environmentalpollution, exploitation of san coral, trampling, hunting seafood ...), in whichthe most serious is the coral reefs of Hon Yen area.

In addition to theabove-mentioned 3 seas and coral reefs, the waters of Hon Chua area (An Chancommune, Tuy An district), is a beautiful sea area with coral reefs. Currently, local people take advantage of this resource to develop a coral diving tour, with the simple form of wearing scuba diving glasses, wearing life jackets thatcan see the beautiful coral reefs here. . In addition, an important indicatorto confirm in this waters is coral reefs and very high levels of biodiversityare sea grass beds right in front of Hon Chua. When the tide recedes, in thearea of My Quang Bac fishing village (An Chan commune) exposes the vast seagrass.

According to Chairman of ProvincialPeople's Committee Pham Dai Duong, the protection, conservation and developmentof coral reefs is now important and urgent. This not only serves to developtourism and snorkeling corals, but it has great significance in protecting themarine environment and developing marine economy in a sustainable way.

Director of Phu Yen Departmentof Culture, Sports and Tourism Pham Van Bay said: “Following the direction ofthe Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, the department worked withthe Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center, this June will continue the program of detailedsurvey, specific assessment of the status of coral reefs, thereby providingsolutions for protection, restoration and development.

In particular, specialattention is paid to coral reefs in Hon Yen area, because this is a nationallandscape that needs to be preserved under the Heritage Law. Moreover, thiscoral reef is suffering a lot of negative impacts from people, even touristsvisiting and taking photos can trampled on corals, because when the tide comesout, this coral reef is exposed right below their foots".
